410 Stainless Steel Round Bar

What is 410 stainless steel?

Grade 410 is the basic martensitic stainless steel. Like most non-stainless steels, it can be hardened by a "quench-and-temper" heat treatment. It contains a minimum of 11.5% chromium, just sufficient to give corrosion resistance properties. It achieves maximum corrosion resistance when it has been hardened, tempered, and then polished.

Grade 410 is a general-purpose grade often supplied in the hardened, but still machinable condition, for applications where high strength and moderate heat and corrosion resistance are required.

Lengths

Circle H Steel provides 410 round bars in various lengths, with value-added sawcutting services to provide cut-to-length bars for your application. Unlike other suppliers, Circle H Steel can supply bars over 20 ft, providing additional feet of usable material and more efficient storage.

410 Stainless Steel Key Properties

These properties are specified for bar product in ASTM A276. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are specified for other products such as plate, wire and forgings in their respective specifications.

Properties of 410 Stainless Steel

  • Chemistry: 11.5-13.5% Chromium, 0.15%-0.20% Carbon, 0.75% Nickel, martensitic stainless steel.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Good corrosion resistance against atmospheric conditions and mild acids. Can be prone to corrosion in more severe environments and susceptible to pitting in environments with moderate chloride levels. Harden and polish for maximum corrosion resistance.
  • Heat resistance: Good resistance to scaling up to approximately 650°C, but generally not recommended for use in temperatures between 400 and 580°C due to reduction in mechanical properties.
  • Machining: In annealed or highly tempered conditions, 410 is relatively easily machined. If hardened to above 30 HRC, machining becomes more difficult. Free machining grade 416 is a very readily machined alternative.
  • Welding: Readily welded by all standard methods, but a pre-heat of 150-260°C and post-weld annealing treatment is required to reduce the possibility of cracking. Use Grade 410 welding rod if post-hardening and tempering are involved. If parts are to be used in the "as-welded" condition, a ductile joint can be achieved by using Grade 309 filler rod.
  • Heat treatment: A full anneal is performed at 815-900°C (1500-1650°F), followed by slow cooling, and a process anneal is done at 650-760°C (1202-1400°F) and then air-cooled.
